The HONEST answer is that they can no longer afford to pay rental for an AM station broadcasting to the UK>

Also now reported on Media Network, they too mention the high price of oil, which I imagine is the reason.

Thinking back to when the AM was turned off in 2005, the transmitter automatically switched itself back on at 10pm, so you never know there could be a quick broadcast at 10pm tonight!

Actually, that's not the honest answer, that's just speculation. What Chloe said is closer to the truth.

It would be great to have the 'official' line on the BigL 'news' main page, they managed to update the afternoon show presenters past and present a couple of times today. I think knowing 1395 would be back in 4/8/12 weeks would be too much to ask for, would it?
In my line of business, Telecommunications and 12yrs in the RN maintininig HF-UHF radio networks, its not the 'best Engineering Practice' model that we are now seeing, surely getting the new site and transmitter up and running then cut over during the 19.00 ~22.00 UK shutdown would have "been the way to do it" as Mr Punch would say

As a matter of interest Yakcamp (and I'm speaking sincerely here - not trying to be 'smart'), would it have been 'businesslike' to inform the general public (which is in effect, what all of us on the forum are) if you were facing difficult times? What I'm getting at is that if a public announcement were made to us, it's also visible to current and potential advertisers. Surely that's not a very good idea?

But Chirpy Mike Read and Adrian John did say this very thing a few months ago, didn't they?

Far better for the station to be honest with it's listeners and advertisers than to just tell certain privileged listeners and expect them to be the mouth piece of the station.

As in this case more has probably been divulged than they wanted.

The last announcement made by Big L on this forum was on 23rd August, 2007, obviously nothing major has happened since then that that want to tell us about???????????????

If that is true Chirpy – why only a few minutes notice of 1395 being switched off?

Surely, if it was true, they would have been promoting it on air that they would be closing down 1395 in order to make improvements in advance of the actual switch-off?

And be putting out promos now explaining improved AM transmissions will be back soon?

Also, why did Roger all afternoon in respect of 1395 going off keep saying ‘for reasons I honestly do not know’?

This on top of Steve leaving yesterday over money issues – it’s not looking good. Crying or Very sad

Captain266,

I'd class you as a 'privileged listener', you email Mike nearly every day; why don't you ring him up and ask him yourself?

With regards to Big L expecting privileged listeners to be the mouthpiece of the station, that wasn't the case. BLBM wasn't given permission to tell everyone that 1395 was going off the air, he just got a bit 'over zealous'. It's my belief (and only my belief) that Big L weren't going to close 1395 today. I believe they only did it because it suddenly became public knowledge.

Chirpy, I would consider good business practice to match good engineering practice, as if I were a sponsor and a part of my target audience were quickly removed I would be asking serious questions and asking for a rebate, considering the new advertisers in the past few months did they know that 10,000 ears would be lost from their advert audience, will Bet Fred and the Scud continue to play (pay) a part.
I believe a true and active audience, as we are here on FOBL, should be treated a little better than we are currently. That is in line with running a company. I'm sure you are told you are the most important asset in your organisation, and I would hope that we are the most important asset in the BigL sphere, is the audience that along with the sponsors and backers, a classic triangle, take away one side and the shape collapses.

Phil Mackay, (nice one Very Happy )

Thanks for your reply. Actually, no one has ever told me I'm the most important asset in my organisation. Although my area manager from Aldi is always asking me if I know anyone in Ipswich, Stevenage, Harpenden, Leighton Buzzard and Dunstable because she's looking for more caretakers! Very Happy
